Title: rebellion
Characters: reina fujiwara, brief appearances by the air team
Summary: reina wants to know what it's like to have the odds in her favor and the world in her hands.
Warning: lots and lots and lots of spoilers. also lots and lots of tense changes because what is grammar.
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: this was written quite some time ago as well. it's part of the mafia/assassin verse, and probably the only thing i've ever written that establishes a character for reina.
It was a cool, wintry night.
But no, too many stories begin like that, this one is different. This story is my story, so I’ll tell it in a better way.
But yes, it started with a cool, wintry night. I was sitting out on the rooftop, watching the stars disappear and reappear in the sky and the ocean spread out like a curtain of silk. It could be any night, but this night was special.
It was the night that I put forth my plan.
Maybe you need some background information? You know how everyone has their moments, a time when they can’t stand it anymore and finally snap? I know one person who’s rather good at doing so – but that’s not the point. People regard me as the quiet one, the one who observes and who does nothing but sit there and look pretty. But no – this time, it’s my story. Screw Reiko, I’ll be the hero this time.
I’m part of ARIA. It’s an assassin group, sort of like the mafia that Izuko and Reiko are in. In fact, the group itself was created by the underground jobs of the rich and famous people like their parents. Unfortunately, mine are involved as well. After Academy Vorelia, we’ve been appointed – no, more like forced – into this job; we were assigned a whole new personality and codenames have been used for so long I’ve almost forgotten our real names. Izuko, called I-17, and Reiko, R-09, took up the job immediately and accepted it like it was their destiny. They were the special operatives, the ones who carried out the missions. Of course, frustratingly enough, they got the best treatment. Akira, A-11, was the mechanic, funny how the “leader” of the once great AIR team ended up as somebody with a lesser role. Ayami, named A-02, Kagami, K-23, and R-10, that’s me, Reina, ended up as the garrisons, the ones who stayed at base and surveyed everything. I’ve always felt that for some time, we were brainwashed into this mess, but the others didn’t care. It was only I who realized everything - soon, they’d realize that Reina wasn’t as polite and kind as they thought.
I surveyed the plan on my PDA, clipped to the pocket on my skirt. I really hate these uniforms; all of them were silver-grey, with a high collared button up shirt and silver boots. It was futuristic and modern, sure, but it wasn’t to my liking. Around my finger was my ring; it was to be worn at all times, since it was the source of our power. ARIA had created our weapons and rings for us, and they were our lifeline. Anyway, the plan:
We – I, really, have to bring down the two operatives first. It’s sort of a reverse psychology. Tell Reiko the things she doesn’t want to hear, but tell Izuko things she does; the whole point is to destroy the rings, or at least the essence in them. It isn’t that hard, once you think about it. I bet Reiko is playing video games or eating or doing something like that, her weakness is her pride, after all. You have to eat away at that before even trying to bring her down. Izuko, however, is daunting but really weak. Tell her things that you know will shake her, and she’ll crumple down just like that. I’ve seen it so many that it’s almost like second nature. I’ve talked to her, and asked her what her weakness was. She looked at me, held up her little finger, and said “Geo-thermal technology isn’t a very efficient source of energy.”
Oh yeah, real obvious. But it doesn’t matter, she’s creepy like that. You just have to know that she’s easy to beat. That leaves the other part of ARIA. I’ve already destroyed my own ring; the golden essence is already gone, leaving an outer steel ring. Personally, I like it better that way.
Akira was way too easy to beat. I went up to her, asked her for her ring, saying that something might’ve happened in the last minute. She gave it to me with a smile, and I destroyed it, the ruby essence fading away; it was way too simple. Akira glanced at it and then confronted me with that silly dazed look she’s been getting lately. I told her it was for the good of everyone. She’s sort of stupid in that way. But like I said, it doesn’t matter.
Kagami doesn’t have any rings, so that leaves one less for me to deal with.
I head back down to the operative base – I have to figure a way to deal with Ayami, but she isn’t one to give up easily and she seems weak, of course, but how will I do it? I set a time bomb in the main circuitry system – if I don’t destroy Ayami, Izuko, and Reiko’s rings in an hour, my whole plan will be devastated. Let’s hope for the best, expect the worst. Sitting down next to Ayami, I smile that deceiving smile and she grins back genuinely. Ha, that’s another thing – she makes you feel guilty for anything. I suppose with someone like that – you’d have to take it by force.
“I’ll be going now, will you cover for me?” She asks sweetly, and I nod. I tap into the system, hearing two voices.
“R-10, you’re finally here?” Izuko’s voice is chilling.
“We’re with Takeshi and Boriji right now! We’re planning to hook up the geo-thermal systems… however Izuko doesn’t seem very happy to do so…” Reiko sounds like nails on a chalkboard, but maybe it’s just my foggy judgment.
“S-shut up, no one else is supposed to know about that,” Izuko stutters, “y-you know that this bit of commotion could cause a world war!”
Where have I heard that before? Anyway, Ayami is about to walk out of the door, so I get up and trip her; it’s that easy. She falls on her stomach with a gasp, and her ring slips off and skitters along the floor, right at my feet. I pick it up, feel the energy leave just like I could command souls long, long ago, and the ring explodes with green light, the emerald essence disappearing into the air and the steel encasement falling on the floor in front of Ayami’s face in mockery. My sin is sloth, but at this moment, nobody cares. I’m using the fastest way to bring everything down, and perhaps I could recruit some people to help me with those two troublemakers.
No matter what you think, Izuko’s attacks are hard to fight against but the person herself is as brittle and weak as glass. Reiko’s attacks are easy to defeat, but you’ll need more effort to bring the person down. It’ll be easy to get to Reiko through Izuko, and hunt those two down. We’ll stop a world-wide apocalypse, and perhaps do it for the greater good.
My name isn’t R-10, it’s Fujiwara Reina. Remember me as the rebel. ARIA is going down.
So, what do you say? Will you help me?
