Author's Notes: this was supposed to be a nanowrimo project, but clearly, i got lazy and it didn't go through. enjoy anyway.
There was a time when they had promised each other eternity, a plethora of false promises that seemed to whisper ‘forever’ but really meant ‘until we part ways.’ Unfortunately, that’s what they did end up doing, those six girls with determination in their minds, frenzy in their hearts, but perhaps most importantly, sacred rings on their fingers. Perhaps the story is too long to ever recount again, especially because you will get a different tale depending on which ring holder they ask.
Ask the girl with the shy smile, and you’ll get a jumble of murmurs and blushing. She admits that it’s been all a blur from the moment that her sweetheart lay dying on the ground – and he was the first to fall. If you ask the girl with the long pigtails, she’ll laugh and shrug her shoulders, a twinge of pride in her voice when she tells you that she wasn’t there with the rest of them.
If you dare approach the more formidable pair, the girl with the cold, grey stare will likely not breathe a word. Perhaps if you act a little more sympathetic, she’ll let loose a fact about how tough the fighting was or how unfortunate it was that a little bit of their childhood had been lost, but never about her own personal opinions. The girl with the striking amber eyes will be exactly the opposite – she’ll recount her own experiences with a vivid passion, like something out of an adventure book. You thank her but in the end, you’ll realize that you have gotten nothing from her tale.
There’s another girl with the smile that knows more than it lets on and unnaturally blue eyes – she’ll tell you scattered parts of what she remembers but you’ll end up feeling like she’s planted an idea in your head and has only woven a spider web of false fables.
Your best bet is to ask the redhead, the one who usually doesn’t say much about the trials and tribulations that she and her friends have gone through because she feels that she is the one who caused all this despair and obligations to fall upon their heads. She doesn’t seem like the brightest one of the group, but she remembers almost everything in full detail from the moment they landed in the labyrinth to the moment she died. She’s survived the longest of all the six, after all, and the only piece of the story that she doesn’t know how to fit in place was the reason as to why they came back from the dead, why of all the souls up above and down below, it is those six that get saved and sent back to mortality.
She’ll tell you in her thick, tomboyish Japanese dialect that her name is Akira Himura and that nothing unusual has happened since that day where a boy from her childhood tried to steal her heart but instead stole everything that was innocent and pure to her. She’ll show you the ring on her hand – any jeweler will tell you that’s it’s been meticulously made, an exquisite piece of chrome with a fiery ruby set in the center. They’ll tell you that they’ve never seen anything like it.
Whether or not you believe their twisted tale, something that seems to have come out of the imaginations of that girl with the pigtails (she goes by Kagami Nakamura), when the gem on Akira’s ring begins to glow with the fury and resolve of a determined soul, you may as well nod and listen. The shy one - her name is Ayami Kobayashi – insists that miracles happen and the mysterious blue eyed one, that one is Reina Fujiwara, will agree, though she says something cryptic that you aren’t sure you quite understand. The amber eyed girl will grin, but the words she says are dark, something along the lines of “miracles can happen, but the amount of despair to make up for it can cost double the price.” She’ll identify herself as Reiko Takazuki soon after.
The dark-haired girl who is always by Reiko’s side will scoff and say she doesn’t believe in magic, but that’s a little rich coming from somebody who wears a sapphire ring that glows like a pearl on her finger and has relied on so many mystical happenings that her life and sanity hang by a thread. It’s so much for a girl whose name is Izuko Kataro – a name that might as well come from the threads of fantasy because nobody in Japan will know anybody by that name.
Even so, these are only their reactions a few days after what they now call the incident. It’s been years since that fateful day and each one of the girls will claim that they have changed since then, and not only that, but they have changed for the better. Kagami is the type of girl who believes in the best, and she would always gush on and on about how her friends would go so far. She had believed that her friends would one day save the world, and though they may not do that, at least they eradicated some sort of evil. Unfortunately, Kagami’s wishes don’t come true and those six friends have unfortunately split ways.
“You can’t keep holding on to childish dreams forever, I guess,” is what Kagami will say if you ask her about it, and she seems almost embarrassed to mention it now. Sometimes, if you catch her in a certain mood, her gaze will darken and she’ll add, “I did mean it back then, however. I knew how much they could do and all the potential they had. I don’t regret being foolish.”
If Kagami doesn’t regret anything, it must be because she wasn’t there to experience all the loss and death that had come with holding a ring – you don’t notice it at first, but Kagami doesn’t wear a metal band on her finger like the other girls. Instead, she wears a chain around her neck - it’s made of metal, but glints a sort of sanguine color in the light. Sometimes the quirk of her lips give away the fact that she feels left out from the rest of the group, but she’s almost always smiling and so the rest of the girls dismiss her with a sweep of their hands.
To be honest, it’s a little bit tragic.
Upon first glance you’d expect Akira to be the one who leads the group – after all, the incident was caused by her existence, she was the last to die and the fire in her burns brighter and hotter than the others. Perhaps there was a time when she was the leader, but that time is not now. With another quick scan of the crowd you’ll find that almost all of the power and potential lies beneath the feet of the grinning Reiko and the grimacing Izuko. The former has a wild look in her eyes, something volatile that sparks with charm and raw spirit. Her pride precedes anything else, and it’s that confidence that gets her soaring and her soul as bright as stars. Her companion, best friend, and potential soul mate, Izuko is a dark foil – her spirit runs deep and sensual, her every move deliberate and her resolve wavering, melting. It’s as if she doesn’t want to admit how passionate she is, how everything strikes her harder than she lets it show.
The two carry themselves as if they’ve got the world in their hands and everybody wrapped around their little fingers, and it’s not entirely untrue. The others are aware of some large amount of money granted in their names, but nobody quite knows where this money comes from or why it’s those two who are able to gain it. They live life with a sense of rebellion, however - instead of relishing this wealth, they seemed to be repelled by it and take every chance they have to rebel against it.
This is why Akira immediately blames everything on Reiko – Izuko is a little too formidable to even think about confronting, but a rivalry with Reiko is somehow refreshing. This time around, it’s not Akira’s who is responsible for this sudden abduction by men in suits and silent helicopters – this is something that could only be the work of someone with as much influence as Reiko Takazuki and Izuko Kataro. When Akira demands to know why she and Ayami, who had been by her side at the time of capture, have been targeted, one of the men only shake their head and show the two girls a badge that holds the insignia of some sort of organization. Akira doesn’t recognize it but she swears that she’s seen it before – it must have appeared in her dreams or something, she thinks glumly.
When the helicopter descends for a quick second, Akira doesn’t even bother to look out to see where they’ve landed, but the fact that Reina is suddenly forced onboard is something to question. If Akira remembers correctly, she’s positive that Reina’s got as much power and influence as the other pair, but by living in Japan and cutting off some connections with her family in Taipei, she’s ended up in her grandmother’s painfully traditional home.
It explains a lot of things, Akira realizes, such as her speech, her manner of dress, and how she’s ended up in Japan with seemingly no explanation at all. Sometimes the redhead questions why Reina had been introduced to her life the day of the incident, but she’s dismissed it as a lucky coincidence.
Kagami follows not soon after, and Akira’s ready to cry outrage, but something stops her as the plane descends one last time and Izuko steps on, seemingly unimpressed with the whole gimmick. She nods to the man who had shown Akira the insignia and he salutes her, but before the dark haired girl can say anything, Reiko’s dashing up the roof and when she catches sight of all the others seated in the cabin, she grins and throws her arms up in the air.
“I bet you weren’t expecting any of this, huh? Consider it your lucky break – welcome to a world where we’ll fit perfectly into. Welcome to your very own assassin group!”
Akira swears that there has never been another time where she had wanted to sock the egotistical girl in the face for all she and her pride are worth.
